Tracing the $31 Million Bitcoin Donation to Silk Road Founder
Blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis has uncovered the source of a mysterious $31 million Bitcoin donation sent to Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht. According to a Wired report, the funds originated from another dark web marketplace called AlphaBay.
The transaction, first recorded on May 31, initially baffled cryptocurrency observers. Some had speculated the coins might have come from Ulbricht's personal stash accumulated during his Silk Road operations.
AlphaBay emerged as a dominant dark web marketplace shortly after its 2014 launch, attracting hundreds of thousands of users before law enforcement shut it down in 2017. The platform accepted multiple cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Monero. After a brief 2021 relaunch, AlphaBay ceased operations permanently less than two years later.
Chainalysis investigators believe the unusually large donation likely came from a significant AlphaBay figure, though the exact motivations behind the transaction remain unknown.
