Crypto Crackdown: Footballers Embroiled in Alleged $3.4M Fraud Scheme
Shirtum Europa's Collapse Exposes Risks of Crypto Partnerships in Spanish Football
In a shocking turn of events, six elite footballers, including World Cup winners and former Barcelona and Sevilla stars, find themselves at the center of a criminal investigation into a crypto and NFT scheme that allegedly defrauded investors of at least $3.4 million.
The case, filed by 12 victims earlier this year, accuses Shirtum Europa SLU and its promoters of selling non-functional NFTs tied to footballer image rights, using the company's in-house token, $SHI, as the sole means of payment.
Footballer Reputations Exploited for Credibility
Among the players named in the complaint are World Cup winners "Papu" Gómez and Lucas Ocampos, as well as former Barcelona stars Ivan Rakitić and Javier Saviola, and Nico Pareja and Alberto Moreno. The footballers allegedly served as promotional faces for the venture, with "Papu" Gómez, a close friend of the alleged ringleader, David Rozencwaig, reportedly recruiting other players after presenting himself as a company "founder."
The NFTs, some priced at over $513 (€450), were marketed as exclusive digital collectibles but were never made tradable or supported by a functioning platform. Investigators say funds were siphoned for personal use, and the Shirtum platform was quietly abandoned.
Crypto Embrace Proves Problematic for Spanish Football
The Shirtum scandal highlights the volatile relationship between Spanish football and crypto partnerships. A ban on gambling advertising implemented in 2021 has created a sponsorship vacuum that crypto firms have rushed to fill, leading to a wave of crypto-related deals with La Liga clubs.
However, this crypto embrace has proven problematic, with many clubs left with "defaults, complaints, and an experience to forget" after partnerships with crypto sponsors soured. Several Spanish clubs are now suing their crypto partners for unpaid sponsorship fees.
Lessons Learned: Navigating the Crypto Minefield
As Mohith Agadi, founder of decentralized fact-checking system Fact Protocol, aptly noted, "People see big names like football stars and think it's a safe bet, but that trust can be exploited." The Shirtum case serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the need for greater scrutiny and due diligence when it comes to crypto partnerships, even when backed by high-profile athletes.
In the rapidly evolving world of crypto and digital assets, the Shirtum scandal underscores the importance of investor education and the need for robust regulatory frameworks to protect consumers from such scams. As the crypto industry continues to intersect with traditional industries like sports, navigating these partnerships will require a delicate balance of innovation and prudence.
