Polygon's Founder Seizes Full Control, Streamlines Roadmap for Explosive Growth
Sandeep Nailwal Takes the Reins as Polygon CEO, Prioritizes Performance and Decentralization
In a strategic shift, Polygon founder Sandeep Nailwal has announced he's assuming full control of the Polygon Foundation and taking the CEO role. As the largest holder of Polygon's native POL token, Nailwal aims to bring "clear direction and focused execution" to the ecosystem.
This leadership change marks a departure from Polygon's previous institutional governance approach. Nailwal believes his hands-on involvement is crucial to realizing Polygon's full potential, given his deep commitment since the project's inception.
Streamlining the Roadmap: Focusing on Polygon POS and AggLayer
Nailwal's repositioning strategy includes significant roadmap changes. Most notably, Polygon will sunset its zkEVM in 2026 to concentrate resources on two core offerings:
- Polygon POS: Focusing on stablecoin payments and real-world asset integration
- AggLayer: Building a "trustless internet of blockchains" for secure interoperability
This refined focus aligns with Nailwal's vision of creating one of blockchain's highest-performing networks while increasing value for POL stakers.
Ambitious Performance Targets and Decentralization Initiatives
Polygon has already launched its "Gigagas" roadmap on testnet, currently processing over 1,000 transactions per second. The team aims to scale this to 5,000 TPS by 2025's end, reinforcing Polygon's position as a leading layer-2 solution.
Nailwal is also prioritizing decentralization efforts:
- Spinning off ZK research into new initiative Polygon ZisK under Jordi Baylina's leadership
- Maintaining Polygon Labs under CEO Marc Boiron to continue driving innovation
Institutional Governance Slowed Progress, Nailwal Seeks Aggressive Repositioning
Nailwal's decision reflects his belief that Polygon's previous governance structure hindered progress. By taking direct control, he can make decisive moves to accelerate growth and enhance POL's value.
With the recent SEC lawsuit regarding POL (formerly MATIC) resolved, Polygon is now focused on strengthening liquidity and cementing its status as a premier layer-2 solution in the evolving crypto landscape.
